My recurring childhood nightmares pt.1
My childhood dreams were recurring, always based on places I’d been or childhood homes I’d lived in—but warped, as if poorly remembered. The layouts were slightly off, or the interiors felt unnaturally vast. One recurring dream took place in my grandma’s house, a large lakeside home I visited often as a kid. In the dream, the layout twisted into something strange: instead of the usual entrance leading to stairs down to the living area, there was a grand staircase with walkways lining the upper walls near the roof. They led to different parts of the house, but something always felt wrong. This setting appeared in many childhood nightmares. In one, I’d stand in a hallway with darkness at the end. When I tried to step forward, my legs wouldn’t move. Dread would overwhelm me as the darkness crept closer, and just before it reached me, I’d wake up. Sometimes, the dream shifted to a room with a large glass window and sliding door beside the bed. Outside was pure darkness and endless torrential rain. I felt something lurking there but couldn’t move from the bed. I’d watch, waiting for something to emerge—but nothing ever did. Still, I knew it was there. As always, I woke up before anything happened. Like right before the climax, I'd suddenly awaken in a cold sweat. It’s strange. I always wondered what monster actually lurked. Maybe it was my brain protecting me from the horrors. I guess I'm thankful for that.
In another recurring dream, I explored an abandoned urban area—like a canal. It started normally, as if I were just a child discovering something new. But this nightmare was far more intense than any others. I’d wander until I found a vertical pipe covered in rusted grates, large enough for a person. Inside, a ladder descended deep into darkness. Every time, I felt an urge to climb down, even though I knew something lurked below. Like I was being beckoned by some creature. Despite my fear, I’d open the grate and descend, lower and lower, until I reached a vast sewer system. Once I reached the bottom, I would see a dark tunnel infront of me. Overwhelming terror seized me. I could hear groaning, and strange noises calling me forward. I wanted to climb back up, but couldn’t, as if something prevented me. This was usually where it ended. This monster wouldn't fully show itself, but before anything happened.. I'd wake up. But sometimes, the dream changed. After descending, an orange light illuminated a small radius around me, and no presence that anything was there. Instead of waking up, I’d explore the maze, passing through rusted doors or staircases, until I found a drawer. When I opened it, dread consumed me until then something reached out from the darkness within. A slender, thin white arm that was wrinkled and old. The hand, with long fingers, grabbing me and pulling me within. I’d wake up immediately. The only way I really cracked this nightmare, was by lucidity. I once stared into the drawer with bravery in my heart, and the fiery determination to face the threat. But, the hand was no longer present. Except, a mere gold coin would be inside. That was it. I never had that dream again. Other times, I couldn’t wake up. I knew I was dreaming but couldn’t open my eyes. Trapped in the dark maze, I’d curl into a ball, eyes shut, listening to the noises around me. Something was there, but I couldn’t bear to look. I would wake up soon, after struggling to get my eyes open. I've had many other dreams where I realized I was dreaming, but couldn't wake up. It's such a weird feeling.
I don't get these dreams anymore. But, I had them quite frequently when I was a kid along with many others. Always some kind of location that was very unnaturally large or with many rooms. Never complete nonsense, and it always interested me that my dreams are like this.
this is so eery, do you remember what was going on in your life when those dreams were happening most often? like was there anything you were afraid of or dealing with that felt too big to look at directly as a child ? I have so many more questions lol but lets start w those :)
Also it sounds a lot like you were in a bunch of "liminal spaces"- could be worth looking into!!
ADHDreaming True. My dreams have predominately taken place in malls, grocery stores, neighborhoods, towns, scenic locations, schools, places from my childhood, pools, hotels, etc. Very rarely have I had abstract type dreams. It's always a location. But, each of these locations are typically recurring. So it's usually the same place every time, rarely differing.
